Do you know that how people perceive you can greatly impact how they treat you, your business and your brand.

Do you ever feel that people have the wrong impression of you? Maybe you’ve been seen as intolerant , arrogant, inconsistent, mediocre or unrelatable. Maybe as a result of a misunderstanding or their past experience with your business or you.

In emotional intelligence for business, we know that people act based on how they feel and they feel a certain way based on what they think about someone, an experience, a product, etc.

It can be frustrating when others don’t see us as we intend. But we forget that we have so much more information about ourselves than other people do.

A person’s perception may be different from what you feel is the truth, but it’s not necessarily wrong. It’s real for them, and the onus is on you, not them, to work to change the dynamic.

Here’s how to change peoples perception of you.

1. Observe how your behavior impacts others

Start by being honest with yourself. Notice how your behavior affects those around you. How do people react to you and your business? If clients are not returning your calls, perhaps your behavior is making them feel pressured or uncomfortable.

Don't be afraid to ask people about how they perceive you and how they feel about your business and their experience with you.

2. Define how you want to be seen

How do you want to be seen? How do you want to people to act or feel towards you? How do you want them to think of you or your business? It has to be clear to you.

Do you want them to see you and your brand as friendly, energetic, valuable, authentic, having integrity, timely, innovative etc. How you want to be seen should be clearly stated and written down.

3. Change Your Mindset

The first step to changing how people see you is by changing how you see yourself. Sometimes people perceive you based on how you feel about yourself.

Do you want people to see you and your business as valuable, quality, friendly, premium etc?

You need to accept a mindset that permits the right perspective of you. This can be done through visualization, possibility thinking and affirmation.

4. Define the required actions

Every result is based on defined actions, you can't cut corners. Define specific actions that you need to take in order to project the desired perception to others.

What do you need to do or stop doing? What do you need to say or stop saying? Where do you need to go or stop going? Who do you need to identify with or stop identifying with?

It’s a perception game.

The actions you take will define people's perception of you overtime.

5. Show Up and Be Consistent

When trying to make a good impression, it's important to actually show up with a particular behaviour that projects the new perception. Remember, it's your responsibility.

When you project a certain behaviour or set of actions over and over again, people will unconsciously begin to incline towards the new perspective of you.

It may not happen in one day, one month or even one year, but when a particular message is received again and again, the human brain receives it. So always have your result in mind.

Remember, people act towards you and your business based on you've made them feel and think. But that can be changed.
